Witchcraft During Pregnacy

Congrats! You’re pregnant!

Chances are you are already being bombarded with hordes of advice and if you’re active in the witchcraft community- the advice doesn’t just end with the usual pregnancy stuff. As you make your transition from maiden to mother, everyone has an opinion or a cautionary tale to share with you.

With everyone slinging their input around, it can be extremely confusing to differentiate between what’s important and what’s just plain hogwash. Hopefully this article can offer some clarity on what advice you can completely ignore and what cautionary ideas might actually have some merit to them.

“Don’t do magic when you’re pregnant!”

This is one of the biggest lies tossed around for pregnant witches and it couldn’t be further from the truth! You can absolutely practice magic while you’re cookin’ your bun in the oven. In fact, you might even find yourself more centered and charged at times and engaging in ritual and spellcraft can actually be a great self- discovery time and bonding experience between you and baby.

“You will curse your baby!”

This one gives me a good chuckle. Even if you’re planning on delving into some shadow work or throwing a hex or two, chances are you’ve already prepared yourself with some thorough grounding and personal protection techniques. If you’re covering your bases to create a safe spell environment for yourself, you can always expand that bubble to include your witchling-to-be.

Grounding, shielding, psychic self-defense, and circle casting are basics that should be implemented when performing most spells that deal with spiritual work and as long as you’re heeding these important processes in protecting yourself when doing spellwork and as long as you don’t skip those steps, your little one will still be snug as a bug.

“You will drain yourself!”

Pregnancy is exhausting and spellwork is exhausting, so you probably won’t be surprised to know that it is entirely possible to over-exert yourself. If you feel uneasy about doing any big ticket spells, use your discretion. If you feel like you’re not up to it, by all means- don’t do it. But if you do, make sure you give yourself extra time to re-energize after your doozy of a devotion.

“Herbs/oils will hurt your baby!”

This cautionary note is probably the one with the most standing because herbs and oils can be unpredictable and it’s true that some herbs don’t mix well with pregnancy. But that doesn’t mean that they are all bad. Herbs and oils can actually have great benefits during pregnancy, but it’s important to do your research thoroughly before introducing new herbs into your space. If you’re used to handling and consuming herbs regularly, make it a point to communicate with your doctor or midwife about which herbs are still safe to use during pregnancy and around baby.

It’s important to remember that no matter what your plans for your pregnancy are, they are always going to be your choice! Don’t let other witches in your community try and discourage you from practicing your craft the way you want to.

No one knows and understands your spiritual limitations more than yourself. As long as you know there isn’t any medical health repercussion or consequences, you’re free to conjure all manner of witchery! So- sit back, relax, and enjoy your journey into motherhood and spend some quality time focusing on yourself and the energy you can produce while you’re creating life.
